Most likely, you found out you were soon going to strike it rich by receiving a telegram - a message sent by telegraph and then delivered in written or printed form. With a telegram, people could communicate with each other from greater distances, receiving news faster than ever before. As a telegraph operator, I’m sure it was an exciting job to have at the time, getting to hear first-hand all of the latest and greatest gossip and information before everyone else.
