Owners Reflect on Owning a Business & Being Moms

Life is a balancing act. Dr. Seuss may have said it best when he wrote, “step with care and great tact and remember that life’s a great balancing act.”  A new phrase we’ve seen on the internet, “mompreneurs”, inspired us to reflect on the two women that have built Cork Tree Creative, Inc. all the while being rock star moms.

Why start a business and add to the balancing act?

According to a study by Care.com,  38% of moms working full time and 25% working part time said it’s “very difficult” to balance a career and family. Owner and public relations director of Cork Tree Creative, Laura Reed stated that owning a business is much different than working for someone else. “There is still stress involved because you want to succeed and grow your company. However, Jan and I know everything we do benefits our company directly. Our clients and our team make our days very rewarding.”

Growing a business isn’t easy, but it does offer flexibility.

When you own your own business, you have flexibility that working for someone else can’t provide. Flexible schedules make it easier to attend school activities for their kids. Some days can be a traditional “9-5 work day”.  Other days stretch long into the night.  “It’s not unusual to be working on a proposal at 10 o’clock at night because the day was filled with meetings," said Reed. "However, if my daughter needs me to be there for her, I am there. Whether it is in the middle of the day or at 6 p.m. at night, I am there. I love that I can set my own schedule.”

There is also a benefit to being a mompreneur as children get older. Owner and creative director of Cork Tree Creative, Jan Carpenter has older children that have seen her balance family and work their entire lives. “Now that my children are older, they have a more profound level of respect for everything I’ve accomplished. Now, they too feel they can have it all. It’s especially important that my daughter sees that you can be a good mom while also achieving career success," said Carpenter.

It’s refreshing to see two women place so much emphasis on family while also succeeding at their own business. There’s a quote that sums up what makes Cork Tree Creative so special. “Success is not the key to happiness, happiness is the key to success.” Reed and Carpenter love what they do. Their passion and love for the job comes across in their work, as well as their interactions with clients and their team.
