The Battle of Writer's Block

You have been staring at a blank screen for the past hour. After typing countless sentences, you find yourself quickly erasing them with the backspace key. Now, you are running out of coffee, time and patience. Your brain physically hurts. Do you know what’s happening? You have writer’s block! Writer’s block can happen to even the most seasoned writers. You know you have to keep going, but how?

Here are some simple tips to help you get back into your writing groove:

Step away from the computer.

 No, seriously. Whether you are working at the office or from your home, it is important to give your mind a break and enjoy some fresh air. Take a little stroll around the neighborhood, walk the dog or do yoga in the park. 

Eliminate distractions to beat writer's block. 

It seems natural to turn to the entertainment of Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest when the creative juices stop flowing, but you must resist. Instead, try turning your phone off and locking it away in your desk drawer. Shut your office door and really let yourself focus on your writing.

Change up your environment. 

Pack up your laptop and hit the road. Head to the nearest library, café, park or museum. By leaving your desk and switching up your surroundings, you make room for new inspiration and creativity.

Free write to beat writer's block. 

Often, starting to write is the hardest part. When there’s a deadline on the horizon, writer’s block can seem even more troublesome. Allow yourself the freedom to write whatever comes to mind. The “free write” tactic can help get the ideas flowing, and You might find yourself more inspired than ever. 

Check off your to-dos. 

Sometimes it is as simple as stepping away from writing. Then, you can get things done. You will be giving your mind a break, while still feeling productive. The feeling of accomplishment from completing a smaller task can often be enough to get you going. 

Ask an employee or friend for some help. 

Maybe you are looking at the topic one-sided and missing the big picture. A conversation with someone about what you are writing can spark new ideas that you never even thought of before. Even simply calling up an old friend and talking about life can be refreshing and inspiring before getting back to work.
