Social Media Management Best Practices

By now, we all know social media plays a crucial role in any business marketing strategy. And, whether we like it or not, it’s here to stay.

No matter the platform, users of all ages rely on social media to gather information, interact with businesses and make decisions regarding future purchases. That’s why having a killer social media presence is key to ensuring you’re not only reaching your audience, but also that you’re proactively engaging with them in a way that promotes your business.

Not sure where to begin? Don’t worry! We’ve got covered with some of our top tips:

DO…Be Consistent

Stagnant pages rarely do well in the world of social media. That’s why you should make it a point to post and share content regularly. Not only does it keep your followers up-to-date, but it also maximizes opportunities to reach and engage with your audience. A great way to keep yourself accountable is to develop a monthly social media calendar. And while consistency with your posting schedule is important, you should also consider your voice and content, keeping them consistent across each platform as well as making sure they fall in line with your brand. Before posting anything, always consider your goals.

DON’T…Ignore Messages or Comments

The age-old saying, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it at all,” seldom applies when it comes to the internet. Unfortunately, no matter your business or platform, your audience will often use social media as a way to express their thoughts and opinions – positive or negative. The worst thing to do as a social media manager is to ignore these negative comments or reviews. Instead, develop a strategy for responding that both acknowledge their discontent while offering a practical solution. Not all messages are bad either! Make sure you take time to respond to positive ones as well.

DO…Track Your Results

Tracking your metrics or analytics, whether it be through the platform itself or a third party such as Google Analytics or Hootsuite, can be a great way to improve your social media presence. Not only can you track how many impressions (views) or engagements (likes, comments, shares) your content gets, but you can also see what times you can best reach your audience, which posts perform well (and which ones don’t) and you can also learn demographic information about your audience. All of this information can be put to good use when developing future content.

DON’T…Forget About Paid Advertising

Along with creating and posting your own organic content, you may also want to consider incorporating different paid advertisements into your social media platforms. Facebook, which still remains the most widely used social media platform, provides business pages with several options for advertising, including opportunities to boost posts, promote pages and get more website visitors. All of these ads allow the user to target different ages and locations. What’s even better is that they work with smaller budgets.

DO…Find Ways to Connect With Your Target Audience

Posting popular or trending content can be a great way to keep your timeline fresh and up-to-date. However, no matter what you post, you always need to keep your audience in mind. This is where those analytics come into play. The more you know about who your audience is, the more you can tweak your content to fit their interests and needs. In doing so, you create a loyal following – one that will only help you to continue to grow your business moving forward.

DON’T…Focus Solely On Following and Likes

While increasing your following and likes are certainly great goals to strive for when managing social media, they’re not necessarily going to “make or break” your business’ success. Instead, focus on creating engaging and meaningful content that not only promotes the best aspects of what you do, but that also provides helpful information for those who follow you. Having a large following is great, and we would be lying if we said that it didn’t feel good to see your post likes grow, but you don’t need a million of either, or both, to make a difference.

Social media management doesn’t have to be scary. In fact, if you do it well, it has the ability to transform your business and your customer’s perception of your brand.
