SEO and your Website
When is the last time you searched for your business, product offerings or services? Did you see your business in the search results? If not, you need to read this post. "What is SEO?" is a very popular question we receive from clients when discussing website development or redesign. To answer the title, yes. SEO is important, and, yes, you should have it on your website. But us telling you that doesn’t mean you get what SEO is or how it benefits your website. So, here’s the low down.
What Is SEO?
First, let’s define what SEO is. SEO stands for search engine optimization. Search engine optimization is essentially using relevant keywords on your website pages so that your website is found by users in organic searches on the internet. Organic means your website is being found in the non-paid sections of Google and other search engines. We’ll focus on Google in this article simply because the giant still owns a huge majority of the market share. Keep in mind that once SEO is applied to your site, it will help in all search engines. So, how do you get on top of those searches?
How To Use - And Use It Correctly
I would be remiss to tell you that the absolute fastest way to increase your position in searches would be to use paid search. If you wanted to be the first listing on page one, you could “pay to play.” Organic search doesn’t work like that. Once your site is optimized for particular relevant keyword phrases, it can typically take three months or longer to consistently appear in the search engines. The benefit is that if Google continually finds the relevancy on your site for that phrase, then you’ll stay at the top of the search much longer, without having to run a monthly budget to do it. The down side is that like most business-related activities, it takes planning ahead and implementation in a timely manner.
Use Relevant Keywords To Increase SEO Optimization
You’ve seen me mention relevancy several times already. Why? Because you always want to make sure that you are using keywords that make sense on your site. The better correlated, the more likely your web page is to appear on the top of the search results. Is there a guarantee that you’ll make it to the top and remain there? No. Google uses an algorithm with over 400 attributes to rank pages and that algorithm is subject to change at any time. And, though Google may strongly hint what factors play into the ranking algorithm, they’ll never tell us what they all are.
The best and most important rule of thumb is that content pages are always written for the readers. Your potential and current customers, after all, are the most important.
